off Pod – Renovation of the Nakagin Capsule Tower
Fifty years ago, the Nakagin Capsule Tower was designed in anticipation of the information society, envisioning a life of mobility in both work and dwelling. It can be seen, in retrospect, as a residential prototype for the nomadic worker. Today, we enjoy near-instant access to vast flows of information through mobile devices—yet this freedom is often accompanied by a sense of suffocating saturation. In such a hyper-connected age, spaces that sever connection become newly valuable. The capsule’s interior, isolated like a pod adrift in an ocean of data, offers freedom precisely because nothing reaches it. Through disconnection, it becomes a space where one can reclaim a deeper, more autonomous sense of freedom.
