Renovating a “Kominka” Through Shadows

This project involves the renovation of a former diplomat’s residence, situated on a flagpole-shaped site of approximately 2,000 sqm in Kamakura’s historic district. Surrounded by dense woodland and seemingly detached from the temporal flow of the city, the house is structured with an exceptionally robust timber framework—something no longer seen in contemporary housing. Its interior remains dim even during the day, where it is not light but shadow that defines the spatial quality. While the layout is significantly reconfigured to support its new function as a vacation rental, our approach seeks to preserve the residence’s identity by carefully extracting and re-situating the distinctive quality of its shadows within the renewed space.
