Ephemeral Boundaries Appearing in Rain

This is a plan for the residence of the head priest located in a corner of the grounds of a temple in Kamakura. Drawing on the temple's origins, which include the founding priest performing rain-praying rituals, the theme of rain was established for the entire residence. In response to the site conditions, a gabled roof with a single-story structure was arranged in a staggered configuration. Between the kitchen and the temple grounds, an extremely thin screen was installed to create a virtual boundary line with minimal physical presence. On sunny days, the screen appears almost intangible, but during rain, water flowing down the screen transforms it into a tangible structure, creating a visually distinct boundary. The rainwater flowing down the screen serves as a water source for soil improvement, aiming to enhance the overall environmental quality of the temple grounds. The boundary line, which takes on different appearances in sunny and rainy weather, seeks to convey the founder's philosophy to people and serve as an architectural embodiment of the benevolent rain that once brought a rich environment to the temple grounds.
